Pesticide Residue Testing

Pesticide residue testing screens cannabis and hemp products for trace amounts of agricultural chemicals that may remain in plant material or extracts following cultivation.

Because cannabis products are frequently inhaled or ingested, residual pesticides present a direct consumer health risk. True North Analytical uses validated multi-residue analytical methods to screen for a broad panel of pesticide compounds against Minnesota OCM action limits.

What Are Pesticide Residues?

Pesticide residues are trace amounts of chemical compounds used during cannabis cultivation to control insects, fungi, bacteria, or competing plant growth. Pesticides may be applied directly to plants or to the growing environment and can persist in plant tissue, extracts, and finished products.

Many pesticides approved for use in general agriculture are not permitted for use on cannabis intended for human consumption. The inhalation route of exposure — common with smoked or vaporized cannabis products — can concentrate certain chemical compounds and increase their toxicological impact compared to oral ingestion.

How Pesticide Testing Works

Pesticide residue testing uses advanced chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS or GC-MS/MS) instrumentation to detect and quantify trace pesticide compounds in cannabis samples. These methods can identify pesticide residues at parts-per-billion (ppb) concentrations, providing the sensitivity required to meet regulatory action limits.

Samples are prepared using validated extraction procedures to isolate pesticide compounds from the plant matrix. Results are compared against OCM-established action limits, and a pass or fail determination is issued for each analyte.
