Mycotoxin Testing

Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by specific species of mold. These substances can remain in cannabis plant material and finished products even after visible mold is no longer present or has been removed — making mycotoxin testing essential in addition to standard microbial screening.

True North Analytical screens cannabis products for the mycotoxins most relevant to regulated cannabis markets, including aflatoxins and ochratoxin A, in accordance with Minnesota OCM requirements.

What Are Mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by certain mold species as a byproduct of their growth. Unlike the mold organisms themselves, mycotoxins are non-living chemical compounds that cannot be eliminated by removing visible mold, drying the product, or applying heat.

Aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, G2) are produced primarily by Aspergillus mold species and are classified as Group 1 human carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Ochratoxin A is produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium species and is associated with kidney toxicity and has potential carcinogenic properties.

Cannabis products contaminated with mycotoxins at elevated levels pose a direct health risk, particularly through inhalation.

How Mycotoxin Testing Works

Mycotoxin testing uses immunoassay screening or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods to detect and quantify mycotoxin compounds in cannabis samples. LC-MS/MS provides high sensitivity and specificity, enabling detection at the low concentration thresholds required by regulatory frameworks.

Results are compared against action limits established by the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management to determine compliance status.
